Arc School Napton previously provided education for children in Key Stage 2 but following an extensive refurbishment programme and registering process with regulator Ofsted, the school has now extended its offer for pupils aged between 5 and 11 in Years 1 to 6, one of few such provisions in the country.
The school, in Napton-on-the-Hill, Warwickshire, offers a specialist environment which benefits children whose educational needs cannot be met in mainstream environments.
Headteacher Adrian Gyles said: “This is a really exciting time. We’ve recently completed a range of refurbishments at the school to ensure the environment can meet the needs of younger pupils.
“The environment is a nurturing one that allows for greater learning through play and activity-based learning rather than the formality of sitting behind tables. Children will be guided through activities which will in turn help them to learn independently.”
The school is currently accepting referrals for the new Key Stage 1 classes – the introduction of which has seen the potential school roll rise from 20 to 35 children. Most of the children referred to the school are out of education or already in a specialist teaching environment.
Adrian said: “We have a very child-focused admission procedure to make sure we are the best place for the young person and that we can meet their needs. Referrals come through the local authority and we will assess to see if we think we can meet the child’s needs. If we can, the child and their parents will be invited to come along to the school for a visit.”
“That can take whatever form is needed to make the child comfortable. We’ve had children visit who are extremely school-phobic, for example, so we introduce slowly and can arrange second or more visits if need be, to help the young person get used to the school, the staff and ultimately the other children. It’s very bespoke to their own individual needs.”
If a child is going to come to the school, the team will also go out for a home visit to chat to parents and others about the child’s likes and dislikes and to show school picture books, team photographs and other materials to help introduce the young person to the school.
Adrian said: “We’re all very much looking forward to welcoming children from Key Stage 1 to the school. The older children are looking forward to being mentors and the leadership and learning opportunities that this will bring for them.”
