LEAWAYS SCHOOL SECONDARY CAREERS PROGRAMME 2018-19

Start Programme

All Year Groups

  • Students will generate job suggestions based on their skills, qualities, interests and work preferences.
  • Students will use the programme to identify how much they can expect to be paid for particular careers.
  • Students will research the availability of job profiles and consider how this might affect their decisions.
  • They will develop their understanding of qualification requirements and possible routes into identified careers.
  • They will identify potential providers to identify possible destinations post-16 / post-18.
  • All information relevant to their input will be printed and kept in their Aspirations and Achievements folder.
  • Information about the programme will be shared with parents to enable them to provide support at home.

Individual Careers Guidance

Year 8 and 9

  • All students will have an interview with an independent Careers Advisor.
  • The Careers Advisor will review the Aspirations and Achievements folder with the student to discuss their aspirations.
  • A record of the interview will be kept in the folder.
  • Action points from the interviews will be shared with parents.

Year 10 and 11

  • All students will have at least two interviews with an independent Careers Advisor.
  • The Careers Advisor will review the Careers folder with the student to discuss their aspirations and possible pathways.
  • The Careers Advisor will also offer support with regard to completing applications.
  • A record of all interviews will be kept in the folder.
  • Action points from the interviews will be shared with parents.

Links with Employers

Year 7-11

  • All students will participate in at least one workplace visit tailored to the demands of the current labour market and to promote STEM careers. Delivered in partnership with Inspire!

Year 9

  • Students will complete a 4 week course to prepare them for the expectations of work experience and to support them to make appropriate choices.

Year 10

  • All students will complete an extended work experience placement.
  • Students will participate in an Interview Skills Day with volunteer employers. Delivered in partnership with Inspire!
  • All students will participate in an Apprenticeships workshop to develop their understanding of this pathway.

Year 11

  • All students will participate in an Application Skills Day with volunteer employers.

Links with FE/HE

Year 9

  • Students will participate in a project delivered in collaboration with a local FE institution. Parents will be invited to attend an assembly to celebrate the outcomes of the project.

Year 10

  • All students will attend bespoke taster days to develop their understanding of college, the support they would receive and the choices open to them in the summer term. Parents will be invited to attend.
  • As appropriate, students will visit a local HE institution to find out more about possible pathways. 

Year 11

  • Colleges are invited to come and speak to students about their institutions and courses on offer. Parents will be invited to attend.

Curriculum

Year 7 to 11

Students will be provided with opportunities to meet a variety of professionals linked to particular subject areas and matching the needs of the local labour market, where possible.

Teachers will identify opportunities to link students’ learning experiences with further education and careers.
