Supported by Head of Science at Leaways Ricky Nestfield, the students took part in the Blair Project, a STEM challenge which aims to teach young people lift skills which apply to the world of work.
Their challenge was to convert a go-kart into an electric version, enhance it, test it and then race it. The challenge aimed to help people identify and work to their strengths, analyse where they may have weaknesses and then come together as a team to create a great go-kart.
Ricky said: “This was a great challenge and one which really allowed everyone to get involved and play a significant part in the project, depending on the areas where they felt strong and comfortable and to use their skills. Some people really excel at science and maths, so the design of the kart suited them best. Others are more practical and hands-on, so the build and development of the kart was where their strengths lay.
“For our creative children, developing team branding and fundraising was more their thing and for those who enjoy physical challenges, well the testing and driving was definitely their forte!
“The brilliant thing was everyone could be involved and that the project covered so many different parts of the curriculum; science including physics, design and technology and art. It also brought people together to work as a team.”
