Leaways School London is an independent specialist day school in Hackney, East London and provide education for children and young people aged from 7 to 17 who have social, emotional and mental health difficulties. They also have a separate specialist area to support young people on the autistic spectrum (ASC) and a Primary unit.
In September Leaways introduced the ‘Accelerated Reader’ programme where all children have at least 1 dedicated Reading lesson a week and get to complete weekly quizzes on what they have read. They have seen some fantastic results, every child that has participated in the programme improved their reading age in just one term. The staff are excited to see what outstanding progress can be made by the end of the year. One of the readers in the primary group has made such wonderful progress and after completing one of his books he jumped up with joy and stated “YESSSSS! After 8 years I can finally read!”
Everyone is really proud of him - well done!
The school have been rewarding participation through weekly certificates in assembly with the top 15 readers across the school getting to go on a trip of their choice. Last term the school chose Madame Tussauds and so those who had read the most amount of books and had completed the most amount of quizzes got to visit the attraction and all had a fantastic time.
They are now busy reading more books and soon the Student Council will be deciding upon the next trip for the top readers this term.
