Young people from our Olsen House School recently spent the day taking part in activities aimed to build empathy and a knowledge about issues that happen in everyday life.

In the morning the young people were met by Thomas and Adam from the Deaf Active Charity and BSL_Hands charity who taught the them how to sign certain colours and emotions as well as learning how to sign the Beatles classic “Love me Do”.

After the main activity the young people were given an opportunity to ask Thomas questions all about deafness and what life is like living with deafness. Everyone really enjoyed the workshop and some have even used the skills they learnt the next day.

They then went to Formby Pine woods where they were given the challenge to build shelters to keep them dry and warm if they were to live in them. It was a cold day and the young people worked hard to make their shelters as warm as possible.

They were then asked to imagine how they would feel if they were homeless and they had to find ways of keep themselves warm.

Following on from the success of this day, the young people at Olsen House School will be building shoeboxes to give to a local homeless charity towards the end of term.
