Leaways School London provides a safe learning environment for children and young people with EHC Plans and specialises in supporting those with social, emotional and mental health needs.
The school aims to offer as close to a mainstream experience as possible while providing the additional care and support each young person needs to enable them to thrive.
The curriculum is based on children and young people having the confidence to achieve at a pace and level that meets their needs, which is suitably challenging, engages them in learning and is delivered with purpose and rigour. The curriculum also offers all children and young people the opportunity to learn and to undertake experiences through a range of activities.
Such opportunities include taking part in regular projects supporting those less fortunate within the local community. Currently the school are working together on the ‘Crisp Packet Project’. The aim is to make pouches out of crisp packets that resemble a ‘bivvy’ bag to give to those who are homeless living in the area. A ‘bivvy’ bag is like a waterproof and insulated jacket for a sleeping bag. It’s a thin, waterproof bag, and is used over the top of a sleeping bag and is cheaper than a tent.
They are starting the project by collecting used, empty crisp packets which they will then clean and iron with plastic to make an insulation pouch for the sleeping bags the homeless use.
For World Mental Health Day the children at Leaways have been working on positive, kind words and messages. The children will then decorate a pebble or stone with their motivational words.
On the 9th October, the children will then go and deliver the pebbles into the local community. Leaways held a parents meeting recently, where the parents had the opportunity to join in and participate in the Positive Pebble Project.
