Fernways School, Windlesham will support children and young people with autism and associated learning needs, enabling children to re-engage positively with education from 7-16 years old.
The school will provide local children with a specially designed learning environment created to meet their sensory and emotional needs. It will offer a low arousal and nurturing safe place where they can learn and grow.
“I am a Secondary English specialist with 11 years’ experience teaching in both mainstream and special school settings. I am very excited to be joining Fernways from Dove House School Academy, an outstanding special school that caters for MLD, including ASD, in Hampshire where I was Head of Faculty for English.
It is my firm belief that pupils of all abilities and backgrounds deserve to receive consistently outstanding, quality first learning experiences in English lessons, which are engaging, personalised and centre around their holistic development with a view to preparing them for adulthood. I have a wealth of experience in developing and adapting an English curriculum content to best suit the needs of each student and embed opportunities to nurture their intellectual curiosity while at the same time equipping them with essential functional literacy and communication skills.
I recognise that for many pupils, but particularly those with special educational needs, English can be a subject that makes them feel anxious and uncertain. However, through an empathetic, child-centred approach, pupils at Fernways will learn to feel confident and motivated to engage in the subject and have their successes celebrated and areas for development supported.
Whilst my specialism is English, I am passionate about the development of teaching and learning on a school-wide scale so that pupils in all subject areas receive the highest quality, aspirational education. I have experience supporting teachers from across the curriculum to devise new ways of ensuring that the resources and content they provide are accessible and suitable for the literacy, language and communication needs of each child and that they enable them to achieve their best possible outcomes.
I am also an experienced Newly Qualified Teacher Mentor and Trainee Teacher Mentor. The opportunity to share good practice and discuss the pedagogy and process of learning and how to best engage and help pupils access subjects, is something I find extremely valuable and fulfilling.”
Through close partnerships with families, professionals and the wider community, Fernways School will ensure that all children who attend the school meet their full potential.
