With a few weeks of the new Autumn term firmly under its ‘belt’, Mill School Bury is looking to the future and has a busy few weeks and months ahead. Headteacher Deborah Morley shares the school’s exciting plans.
“There are many reasons we’re fortunate here at Mill School Bury. Our school building is great – there’s lots of space inside and out for a wide range of learning including inside and outside of the classroom. Each floor has dedicated break out spaces and sensory rooms. We also have a fantastic rebound room to help with emotional regulation and an immersive reality room where children love to learn in the virtual spaces it offers.
“Outside we have dedicated spaces for outdoor education and, importantly, lots of space to play and let off steam!
“Since I became Headteacher my focus has been on building a strong, consistent and stable staff team. We are fortunate to have an experienced and enthusiastic team of staff across teaching, teaching support, therapeutic and in all other roles. We also have a very experienced leadership team.
“As a team we are united in their goal of making sure the child has what they need from their education. If a child can’t function inside, they’ll review the child’s curriculum and look at what can be done to facilitate learning.
“We also have very strong links and good relationships with the local authorities who we serve, working flexibly with them to ensure the needs of pupils are met.
“And it’s on this strong foundation that we will continue to grow. We had already identified that life skills was going to be a key focus of support need for our pupils. We have plans to create a life skills hub within the school which will also be a little self-contained flat; children will be able to come and practice skills like putting a washing on, cleaning and those skills they will need as they move towards independence.
“We’ll continue with our exciting programme of enrichment and enhancing cultural capital through music, sports, cookery, visits in the local community and further afield – including a Humanities trip to the North-East.
“We want to bring learning to life for young people and for them to leave us as best prepared as possible for taking their next steps in life positively and with confidence. For some that will come from academic achievements, for others vocational and for some others, a combination of the two.
“As we move on through the term and beyond, we will keep being ambitious for our pupils and do all we can to help them achieve the goals that are important to them.”
