October is Sensory Processing Month! Kaye Crossley, Kedleston Group Lead Occupational Therapist has put together a bespoke timetable of sessions throughout the month which she will be leading with the team at Mill School Bury covering the 8 key sensory systems.
Yesterday’s session was focussing on the Touch and Taste.
The session started with the children being challenged to eat individual pots of mixed fruit using only a cocktail stick and whilst wearing gloves. The different foods were then discussed in terms of taste (I.e. sweet, sour or salty) and of texture. The children shared their individual taste preferences and how difficult they found the task while wearing gloves. This helped to highlight the importance of touch in fiddly fine motor tasks.
The group then played a range of scooter board games and big ball games which explored different touch sensations, including light touch, deep touch pressure and tactile discrimination.
At the end of the session, the children were all offered an extra slice of fruit, mango was definitely chosen as the favourite. Sweet tastes and smooth textures were definitely the most popular with this group!
