Our Olsen House School in Sefton is running a fantastic reward-based system designed to encourage their children and young people to engage more with reading.
So how does it work? The children need to read a book and then pass a quiz on Accelerated Reader (this is to check they have understood what they read). Accelerated Reader keeps track of how many words the students have read, which they then equate to various prizes; a higher word count means better prizes. For example, if a young person has read 10,000 words, then they can buy a book from the local bookstore, if they read 500,000 words then they can go to the cinema.
They started the initiative in January, and since then, reading within the school has increased by a brilliant 22%. This highlights the success of the Millionaire Club already and illustrates how it is improving reading engagement throughout Olsen House.
Headteacher, Mick Simpson said: "It fills me with joy to see reading become such a prominent part of our pupils' lives. The numbers, of course, make great reading."
