The children engaged extremely well and were able to voice their personal aspirations and gain a better understanding of the route to their career goals.
Workshops included:
- A career in lifeguarding - Mr Cooper led a workshop on a career in lifeguarding. The children engaged extremely well and learnt about the important skills required to be a successful lifeguard along with key information on water safety.
- A career in catering - Some of our Key Stage 3 & 4 children had identified becoming chef as a personal career goal. For their workshop, the children had to work as a team in creating a 3 course meal in which the school leadership team tasted and reviewed. On the menu was: Moroccan spice & sweet potato soup - Chicken and Chorizo Ragu - Apple Crumble Sundae. The children were marked on taste and presentation and received some excellent feedback.
- A career in boxing/ martial arts coaching - A local boxing and martial arts instructor, led some fantastic sessions on how to become a martial arts coach and how to deliver training sessions safely. The children began by learning various sequences and techniques and then shared their skills by teaching this to their peers.
- A career in healthcare - One Key Stage 3 class took part in a workshop which taught them about body parts and the functions of various organs. Led by our schools Science teacher, the children engaged extremely well, in which they dissected a pig. The hands-on approach of dissection allowed the children to see, touch and explore the various organs. Seeing organs and understanding how they work within a single animal may strengthen pupils understanding of the biological systems. When applied to their own bodies, this may then translate to a greater understanding of human biology and healthcare. – (edulab;2016)
- A career in sports coaching - A young person in year 11 led a football workshop to one of the Key Stage 2 classes. This young person was able to share his passion of sport and created a training session in which the lower school children highly enjoyed. All children were praised on their teamwork and how they were very supportive of one another. The young person led the session very professionally and devised a very clear and engaging workshop.
- Careers Pilot - All children took part in the careers pilot quiz which supports them in channelling their personal skills towards a potential future career. Through this the children were able to discover what qualifications and skills they would need to gain in order to become employable in their chosen job areas. Children were able to understand of how school can support them on their journey towards future employment.
