At Mill School Bury, inclusivity and the well-being of every student are at the heart of what they do. Recently, Rebecca, the P.E Lead at the school, (pictured alongside Telmo, HLTA at the school) embarked on a Boccia training course that could open up exciting new opportunities for the children. We caught up with her to learn more about this inspiring endeavour and the potential benefits it holds for the students.
Boccia, a precision ball sport that closely resembles bowls, may not be as familiar to many, but its simplicity and adaptability make it an ideal choice for a school like Mill School Bury, which caters to autistic children and those with additional needs. Rebecca's motivation to take this journey was to introduce the game of Boccia to her students, allowing them to explore new opportunities and develop essential skills.
Rebecca shared her insights, saying, "The course was designed to teach the game of Boccia and provide a platform for educators to exchange ideas for creating best practices that will help develop the necessary skills for the game." This highlights her dedication to providing a nurturing and inclusive environment where children can thrive.
One of the immediate goals Rebecca has in mind is to sort a Boccia kit for the school. This kit will serve as a valuable resource, enabling students to engage in this exciting sport and develop their skills. Moreover, Rebecca is even planning an extra-curricular Boccia club during lunchtimes.
The ultimate aim of this initiative is to prepare the students at Mill School Bury for the Greater Manchester Boccia competition, a remarkable opportunity for them to showcase their talents and compete with their peers from other schools. The sense of achievement and pride that comes from participating in such an event can be a life-changing experience for our children.
The introduction of Boccia as an inclusive sport not only encourages physical activity but also nurtures essential life skills, including teamwork, concentration, and sportsmanship.
What a great opportunity for the children at Mill School Bury to grow, develop, and, most importantly, have fun.
