Intent
The curriculum intent is to engage all children and young people with education in a positive way. It will develop their confidence and aspirations for the future irrespective of their entry point and SEND. The curriculum is designed to give children and young people a wide and varied range of learning experiences sequenced at each key stage, to develop their academic, social and emotional ability in both familiar and new environments. This is intended to raise self-esteem, challenge children and young people at an appropriate level and to help them enjoy learning whilst achieving positive outcomes. As children and young people progress through the school the overall intent is to guide them to be educated citizens by preparing them successfully for adulthood, the workplace and the demands of a 21st century society.
Implementation
A high rate of progress is achieved by ensuring that staff have the expert knowledge and resources to deliver engaging lessons and that they respond and adapt to deliver differentiated approaches with individuals. Reading is recognised as the key to accessing the full curriculum and is prioritised for all children and young people. The curriculum is sequenced so that new knowledge and skills build on what has been taught before and children and young people can work towards clearly defined end points. It will ensure they achieve a range of outcomes including both academic and social and emotional to enable them to make a successful transition to the next phase of their education, training or employment. Targeted programmes of essential skills are implemented for each pupil to develop social and emotional skills over time providing greater access to the curriculum. The personalised curriculum provided at Olsen aims to build on strengths and to reduce barriers to learning within an environment in which children and young people feel safe.
Impact
Securing social and emotional knowledge and skills is as important as academic achievement. The knowledge and skills the children and young people accumulate over time are reflected in their individual outcomes including nationally recognised qualifications, successful vocational experience, and positive progress and achievement against personal development targets on their EHCP. The overall impact of the curriculum can be measured by children and young people being successfully prepared for the next phase of their education, training or employment.
