About the role:
The Site Maintenance and Facilities Manager will be responsible for the maintenance, upkeep, and repairs of Mill School Bury and its grounds. The role ensures the environment remains safe, comfortable, and conducive to the learning and wellbeing of the children, staff, and visitors. The post holder will work proactively with the leadership team to uphold the values and goals of the school, ensuring a high standard of facilities management in line with regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Maintenance and Repairs:

  • Oversee both reactive and proactive maintenance of the school building and grounds to ensure high-quality standards.
  • Carry out minor and temporary repairs and maintenance tasks across plumbing, electrical systems, lighting, and general facilities.
  • Assist with internal redecoration and refitting projects.
  • Coordinate cleaning duties, ensuring daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning tasks are completed efficiently and deep cleaning is carried out annually.
  • Maintain internal and external areas, including grounds maintenance and seasonal clearing (snow, ice, detritus).

2. Health and Safety:

  • Ensure the site is maintained in line with Health & Safety regulations, undertaking risk assessments, COSHH compliance, and statutory checks.
  • Attend regular Health & Safety training and update knowledge on compliance with school regulations.
  • Supervise and support contractors in line with the school's safety policies, ensuring they follow the required Health & Safety guidelines during projects.
  • Ensure fire, emergency lighting, and water systems are regularly tested and up-to-date.

3. Security and Safety:

  • Manage the security of the site, including the locking/unlocking of buildings and responding to out-of-hours call-outs.
  • Act as the registered key holder for the site and ensure all security systems, including alarms and CCTV, are functioning properly.
  • Ensure safe access to buildings during emergencies (e.g., snow, ice, flooding).
  • Assist in emergency situations, including dealing with burst pipes, fires, or breakages, and making safe any electrical or gas emergencies.

4. Compliance and Monitoring:

  • Conduct regular inspections and checks of electrical systems, lighting, plumbing, and gas installations, reporting or repairing issues as required.
  • Ensure statutory compliance with building regulations and maintain all relevant records using the CAFM system (Civica/Parago).
  • Oversee the use and storage of cleaning and maintenance materials in compliance with COSHH guidelines.

5. Contractor Management:

  • Coordinate and oversee contractors, ensuring the quality of work meets the required standards.
  • Source contractors, manage schedules, and monitor the progress of contracted work.
  • Ensure all work is completed within the guidelines set out in the Kedleston Policy Framework.

6. Driving and Logistics:

  • Carry out driving duties as required, including logistics support, transportation for visits, and vehicle maintenance.
  • Maintain a log of weekly safety checks for school vehicles and fuel them as necessary.

7. Miscellaneous Duties:

  • Respond to enquiries from staff, students, contractors, and emergency services.
  • Supervise and support the cleaning team and contractors, ensuring effective task completion.
  • Assist with the induction, supervision, training, and development of staff as required.
  • Undertake other duties as needed, including occasional unsociable hours to meet operational needs.

Key Requirements:

  • Proven experience in facilities management or a similar role.
  • Strong knowledge of Health and Safety regulations and compliance.
  • Ability to work independently and proactively to resolve problems.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to supervise and coordinate contractors and cleaning teams.
  • Full UK driving license and ability to carry out driving duties.
  • Ability to undertake emergency first aid training and respond effectively in crisis situations.
  • Commitment to the school’s safeguarding practices and child protection policies.

Training and Development:

  • Participate in ongoing training, including Team Teach training, to support children with Social, Emotional, Mental Health (SEMH) issues and Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC).
  • Participate in safeguarding and child protection training to ensure the school’s commitment to a safe environment.

We are an independent specialist day school in Bury, Greater Manchester designed with a state-of-the-art learning environment which has been created to meet the needs of young people with autism. Here at Mill School we are experienced at working with young people who have been out of education for a period of time, or who have become school phobic.
