In-house speech and language therapy is set to benefit pupils attending our Warwickshire specialist primary school, Arc School Napton.
The school offers places to children whose educational needs are not met in mainstream settings including those with social, emotional and mental health needs and those who are autistic.
As part of enhancing its Key Stage 1 offer, the school is introducing an in-house speech and language therapist to provide day-to-day therapeutic input for children, particularly those who experienced delayed communication skills.
Headteacher at Arc School Napton Jenny Arnold said: “We wanted to bring speech and language in-house and offer it on a day-to-day basis to pupils. We offer places to children who may either be at Key Stage 1 chronologically or who may be at Key Stage 1 developmentally. Often those children have very delayed communications skills or who may be non-verbal or who use communication systems such as Makaton.
“Our new speech and language therapist will work directly with them day to day. As a school we are focused on being the most communication-friendly environment we can be and the most inclusive it can be.
“We are developing ways of learning and evidencing learning being less reliant on reading, writing and speech based – we want to be more inclusive in helping children express their thoughts and feelings and what they have learned.
“The huge benefit for the children of having this in-house support on a day to day basis will be that support can be almost instantaneous and in the moment. Children can build a relationship with the therapist, which can be more difficult when people are not permanent members of the team, which in turn means the support and therapeutic input can be very much personalised.
“The therapist will not only work with our younger children, but right across the school.”
