At Arc Oakbridge, an autism specialist school nestled in the heart of Birmingham and part of the Kedleston Group, we believe that fostering a sustainable future begins within the walls (and grounds!) of our school. We've embarked on a journey to raise a generation of eco-conscious individuals. Our Eco Committee is at the forefront of this initiative, and we are thrilled to share our progress with you.
Our Eco Committee has sprung to life, with students actively participating in regular meetings. This forum allows them to exchange ideas and create strategies on how to bring these ideas to life. It's fantastic to witness the enthusiasm and dedication with which our students are embracing environmental responsibility.
Here are some of the steps we've taken to make a difference:
1. Recycling Revamp: We've stepped up our recycling efforts by placing more recycling bins around the school, particularly for paper waste. Every sheet of paper saved is a tree preserved.
2. Lights Off: Our Eco Committee members are on 'Light Watch.' They diligently turn off lights in rooms that aren't in use, ensuring that energy isn't wasted when it's not needed.
3. Mud Club: Every Wednesday, we gather for our 'Mud Club.' It's an opportunity for every member of our school community to get their hands dirty, quite literally, as we plant, weed, and spruce up our garden plot in the playground. Our garden is not just a green space; it's a classroom of its own.
4. Composting for a Greener Tomorrow: We've introduced a brand-new compost bin in our playground. This bin is where we collect green waste from our garden and some food waste from the kitchen. With this initiative, we're not just reducing waste but also enriching our garden's soil naturally.
5. Charity with a Purpose: We are in the process of organising a charity event to support an eco-focused charity. This event will not only help us contribute to a meaningful cause but also raise funds for additional equipment in our garden.
At Arc Oakbridge School, we believe that every small effort counts, and together, we can make a significant difference in preserving our planet for future generations.
Stay tuned for more updates on our eco-friendly endeavours!
