At Arc School Napton, we believe in fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all our students. To further this commitment, our dedicated Teaching Assistant, Michelle, has embarked on a journey of British Sign Language (BSL) training. This initiative aims to enrich our staff's communication abilities, particularly in supporting younger pupils and those with specific speech and language needs.
Michelle, an integral part of our school community, was encouraged by the school to enhance her skill set by undergoing BSL training. Her dedication to improving communication at Arc School Napton has not gone unnoticed, and her efforts are already bringing about positive changes.
Upon completing her BSL training, Michelle returns to our school with newfound expertise. She is eager to share her knowledge with the rest of the staff team. This transfer of skills and information is pivotal in creating a more inclusive and accessible environment for our students.
The introduction of BSL at our school serves multiple purposes. We integrate basic sign language into our daily routines, focusing on its application in supporting the Zones of Regulation and emotions, as well as greetings. By doing so, we are better equipped to:
Support the Zones of Regulation: BSL aids in helping students understand and express their emotions, assisting them in self-regulation. By using signs, we provide a non-verbal outlet for students to communicate their feelings effectively.
Enhance Communication: For students with specific speech and language needs, BSL becomes an invaluable tool. It enables our staff to bridge communication gaps, ensuring that every student's voice is heard.
Promote Inclusivity: BSL fosters a sense of inclusivity and acceptance within our school community. It not only empowers students who rely on sign language but also educates others about the importance of diverse communication methods.
We believe that this initiative will not only benefit our students with specific needs but also enrich the overall educational experience for all. As we continue to expand our knowledge of BSL, we are excited about the positive impact it will have on our school community's communication and understanding.
