In addition to the educational offering at our Wings School Notts, they provide a therapeutic service with access to an onsite therapy team. This service is integrated throughout the school and homes to offer a holistic, multidisciplinary approach that is child-centered and solution-focused. They work as a team around the child and employ a range of evidence-based interventions tailored to each young person’s individual needs.
We caught up with Emma Scaysbrook, Lead Registered Nurse at Wings School Notts, to learn about her experience, expertise, and passion for making a difference.
"I have worked as a registered nurse for 14 years in various settings, including surgical, medical, learning disability, and mental health. I spent five years in A&E before transitioning into General Practice and eventually joining Wings School Notts as the site nurse. I am now the Kedleston Group Lead Nurse and Wings Notts Clinical Team Manager. Throughout my career, I have gained many transferable clinical skills in health, well-being, and mental health."
"As a clinical team at Wings, we closely collaborate with our children to support their health and well-being. We develop a timetable offering various interventions, including Team Around the Child, sensory circuits, creative therapy groups, social skills groups, DBT skills, team-building groups using the principles of theraplay, health education, paired interventions, 1-1 sessions, dog grooming, and emotional regulation sessions."
"We maintain an open-door policy for any staff member needing to discuss their own health and well-being, providing advice and support. We offer drop-in sessions for staff, along with clinical supervision, debriefing, and reflection if needed."
"We set specific targets for our sessions, which are measured to ensure they meet the desired outcomes. Our overall aim is to offer consistent and nurturing care to support attachment issues, trauma-related symptoms, and emotional regulation, significantly improving mental health outcomes for our children and promoting their health and well-being."
"We are proud to have opened a clinical suite in September with a brand-new timetable for sessions, which has improved overall attendance. Children enjoy coming to the clinical suite because it offers engaging sessions, and they feel it provides a safe space for them to express themselves and discuss their feelings."
"To me, mental health encompasses emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It influences how one thinks, feels, behaves, handles stress, relates to others, and makes choices. Mental health is not just the absence of mental illness but also maintaining a positive state of mind, coping with challenges, and nurturing fulfilling relationships. This is why supporting children and adults with their mental health is crucial. It fosters overall well-being and quality of life, enabling individuals to lead fulfilling and productive lives, which is why I am passionate about mental health."
