Silverways School will support young people to gain the knowledge, skills and qualifications they need to achieve their ambitions along with a range of other vocational qualifications depending on interest and needs.
The team will focus on preparing children and young people for the next stage of their education or career and on developing confidence and independence. They will place the needs of the children, and improving their life-long outcomes, at the heart of everything they do.
Children and young people will be encouraged to take up a wide range of learning opportunities as well as a range of qualifications up to GCSEs which will be available for study and achievement. Children and young people will also have opportunities to take part in relevant work experience placements.
The bespoke purpose-built school is being developed following the success of our established London based provision, Brookways School in Sutton. The team at Brookways are experienced at working with young people who have been out of education for a period of time, or who have become school phobic. They pride themselves on the support they give for reintegration back into school and provide young people with opportunities to develop friendships and thrive. Silverways School will follow in the footsteps of Brookways School offering a similar tailored and nurturing approach to education and care.
Brookways School have had recent success working with a young person called Jane* who has an autism spectrum condition.
When she joined Brookways School, Jane was increasingly withdrawing from everyone around her, often not speaking at all. As a complete school refuser, the youngster – still primary school age – had been out of education for months. Her family were at their wits end and really didn’t know where to turn.
In the space of six months, things couldn’t be more different for Jane and her family. In their words, they have been taken from the “depths of despair” to the “highest mountain tops”. Jane presented at the most recent school assembly – this is a young person who has truly found her voice.
Her mother says she has noticed a real positive change in her social and emotional well-being saying: “It’s just small steps, but the difference in her is just amazing”.
Jeanette Maynard will be leading the team at Silverways towards similar success stories and positive outcomes and we look forward to sharing these with you.
