Young people and staff from our High Peak School, Cheshire welcomed a VIP visitor to help them officially open their newly refurbished building.
The pupils from the specialist school in Disley were joined by The Worshipful the Mayor of the Borough of Cheshire East, Councillor David Marren and Mayoress, Belinda Marren for the very special event to mark the completion of a £6million renovation.
High Peak is part of Kedleston Group and supports children and young people with autism and social, emotional and mental health difficulties. As well as specialist facilities and staff, the school offers small class sizes and protected quiet learning zones.
It has recently undergone a significant renovation programme including the creation of a bespoke sports hall and outdoor sports court along with performing arts space and new science, food technology and arts classrooms. A dedicated outdoor learning provision has also been incorporated into the new impressive offer at High Peak.
The Mayor enjoyed a tour of the newly updated facilities which was conducted by three of the school’s pupils. He also performed the official opening ceremony by cutting the ribbon to declare the renovated school “open”.
During his tour he met with pupils from across the school and spoke to them about their experiences of going to High Peak, as well as the staff team who support them including Principal Rachel Boylan.
He said: “This is without doubt the best located school I have ever been in. The facilities are second to none. It was an absolute pleasure to meet the children and see how they are thriving in this specialist environment. They are clearly all benefitting hugely from being able to access such fantastic facilities. High Peak is a real asset for the local community.”
Principal Rachel Boylan said: “We thoroughly enjoyed the Mayor’s visit and the children were delighted to meet him. We can’t thank him enough for his time.
“It has been a project to complete the work while the school was still open, but the children were incredibly patient throughout the process and are very much enjoying the finished results.
“We have further plans to continue evolving the facilities we can offer, with a real focus on the wonderful outdoor space we have here so watch this space for a mountain bike track, camping field, outdoor reading and sensory areas and much more!”
