We had the pleasure of sitting down with Vicki, the dedicated Registered Manager of Millstream Lodge, an autism specialist children's home. With a wealth of experience, Vicki shares her insights into how Millstream Lodge is preparing to welcome children in.
1. Getting ready for a heartfelt welcome 💛
"We believe that creating a welcoming environment is the foundation of a nurturing home," Vicki explains. "To ensure the children feel truly at home, we've carefully designed each bedroom with inviting colours and a wall-mounted TV. But it's not just about aesthetics. We've put together welcome baskets filled with thoughtful essentials – from pens and pads to sweets and soft toys – to make their arrival special."
Vicki continues, "Our team is not just experienced; they're passionate about what they do. We've invested in extensive training to cater to the unique needs of the young individuals we're welcoming. Their wellbeing and happiness are at the core of everything we do."
2. Living, learning, and thriving together 🌱
"We want the young people who live with us to know that this is their safe haven," Vicki emphasises. "At Millstream Lodge, they can expect to be heard, to feel secure, loved, and supported. Our dedicated team is committed to helping them reach their full potential. We work closely with educational providers to ensure tailored learning experiences. Activities are planned based on their interests, allowing them to explore their passions and join clubs or groups that resonate with them."
Vicki continues, "Positive relationships are paramount. Before moving in, we establish clear boundaries and routines to create a sense of stability. Effective communication is key, and we use a range of tools to ensure that each young person's unique communication needs are met."
3. A smooth transition to a new chapter 🌈
"Transitioning to a new home can be daunting," Vicki acknowledges. "That's why we make it a planned and thoughtful process. Visits to the home, choosing their bedroom, and engaging in activities with our team help build familiarity and trust. We provide a young people's guide and encourage them to ask any questions they might have. Our goal is to make the journey as secure and comfortable as possible."
4. Activities and adventures await 🎉
"We're all about creating unforgettable experiences," Vicki enthuses. "Our activity plans are as diverse as the interests of the children we welcome. For those seeking adventure, we offer outings to places like Thorpe Park, swimming, gym sessions, cinema trips, and go-karting. If they prefer indoor activities, we have them covered with beauty nights, cinema gatherings, BBQs, cooking sessions, gardening, and arts and crafts."
Vicki adds, "Beyond our doorstep, there's a world of opportunity to join local clubs and groups, from football and army cadets to brownies, girl guides, cubs, scouts, and gym sessions. We're all about nurturing well-rounded individuals."
If you're looking for a safe and loving space, Millstream Lodge might just be the perfect fit.
