James* is now fulfilling his potential at Mill School Bury. Previous schools had been unable to support his SEMH, ASC and ADHD needs which meant that the gap between him and his peers was widening both in terms of academic capabilities and in social interaction.
When James joined Mill School in September, he did not want to come to school and was often overwhelmed by self-doubt around his peers and his school work.
Through Team Around the Child Meetings, Mill School Bury was able to offer a Enhanced Package in partnership with the Local Authorities which gave James the change to access Adventure Therapy; a bespoke curriculum where learning was taken outdoors and away from the classroom, allowing him to build up his self-esteem, talk positively about his mental health and to develop positive coping strategies.
James was able to communicate his feelings better with staff through being in the outdoor environment and during this time developed his communication strategies so that he could use them effectively in the classroom as well as outdoors. Gradually, James began to invite his classmates to his session which saw the development of positive friendships being secured.
Over the course of 4 weeks, James completed a successful transition back into school; he developed relationships with his peers; and was able to sustain him relationships with his peers in the classroom. James no longer required 1:1 support with his learning as he feels secure in the classroom environment. He is engaging fully in all his lessons and is now on track to make accelerated progress.
